Financial Supports for Internationally Educated Professionals

Workforce Training and Employment (WTE) delivers a full range of employment and training services to residents of Manitoba. Internationally educated or trained individuals who require financial assistance in order to work in their profession or trade in Manitoba may be eligible for supports to help cover costs such as tuition, books, and living expenses.

This type of assistance does not have to be repaid.

Recognition Counts

This program supports skilled immigrants wishing to work in their fields of expertise in Manitoba. It offers career and financial counseling, plus the option to apply for a repayable loan of up to $15,000 to help cover the costs associated with gaining recognition (licensure or certification) in a regulated profession or trade.

Manitoba Student Aid

Manitoba Student Aid is a supplemental financial assistance program for Manitobans who do not have sufficient resources to pay for post-secondary education. It provides funding through the Manitoba Student Aid Program and the Canada Student Loans and Grants Programs, including repayable government student loans and non-repayable grants or bursaries. Each application is assessed to determine eligibility and financial need.

OSAP: Ontario Student Assistance Program

The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a financial aid program that supports students with the cost of attending college or university. When you apply for OSAP, you are automatically considered for both grants and loans, and can choose to decline the loan portion if you prefer.

Windmill Micro-Lending

Windmill Micro-lending is a government-funded, registered charity specializing in offering low-interest microloans to internationally-trained professionals arriving in Canada. Windmill offers up to $15,000 to help cover the costs of training, education, and licensing requirements needed to launch their careers in Canada.

Loan Details

Loans up to $15,000. Repayment term up to 5 years.

Loan May Be Used For:

  • Short-term (two years or less) training
  • Exam fees with a professional licensing association
  • Travel expenses to write an exam
  • Qualification assessments
  • Professional association fees
  • Books and course materials
  • English or French language courses specific to employment
  • Living allowance during study time
  • Other related expenses

Eligibility

  • Internationally-trained immigrant with Permanent Resident, Provincial Nominee, Refugee/Protected Person or Canadian Citizen status
  • Planning to pursue training, licensure, or study
  • Currently living in Canada
  • No undischarged bankruptcy

S.U.C.C.E.S.S Foreign Credential Recognition Loan Project

The FCR Loan Project helps Internationally Trained Professionals (ITPs) with their credentialing and employment needs. It acts as a bridging tool to help ITPs return to their professional fields while reducing their financial burden.

Loans from $1,000 – $15,000. Interest at Prime + 1.49%.

Loan May Be Used For:

  • Accreditation-related expenses
  • Course and training fees
  • Books, materials, and software
  • Professional licensing exams

Eligibility

  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or an individual granted refugee status in Canada and who is legally permitted to work in Canada Obtained credentials outside of Canada and seeking to have credentials recognized in Canada, is undertaking training for an alternative career, or both No or limited Canadian experience in the related field

The CSFA program provides financial assistance in the form of loans and grants to eligible full-time and part-time students to pursue post-secondary education in Canada.
